Origin of Name: The word Oklahoma first appears in the 1866 Choctaw-chickasaw Treaty. The word was made up by Native American missionary Allen Wright by combining two Choctaw words: ’ukla (“person”) and humá (“red”); thus Oklahoma means “red person.”
